Auditions Fall 2011

WHY SHOULD I AUDITION?

Let’s face it: you are a college student. You must have things other than some silly audition on your mind. But getting involved in a cappella — even if it isn’t with the Amateurs — is a rewarding experience that can last your entire stay here at Washington University. So, if you like to sing and think you want to be in an a cappella group, you should definitely audition.

WHY WITH THE AMATEURS?

The 2002-2003 Amateurs, doin' it because they love it in Branson, MO.Because. All of the a cappella groups on campus are great, but we like to think we’re a little different. We in The Amateurs are all united by a common idea: we sing because we love it. We want to be the best group we can, but we always try to keep this ideal in mind. Afer all, if we didn’t love it, we wouldn’t rehearse so much.

BUT I’M SCARED.

New 2003-2004 Josie Smith gets some pointers from senior Ashley Nathanson. We know.

An audition can be a pretty intimidating experience — we’ve all been there. And as much as we’d like to delude ourselves into thinking that you’re going to come in calm, cool, and collected, we also know that most of us were nervous wrecks. So we understand. We’re also aware of how impersonal some groups’ auditions tend to be; we’re not like that. We’ll be asking you questions about yourself and your life in an attempt to get to know you better as an auditionee and as a person. And, let’s be honest: shooting the breeze helps you to calm down. Over the years, auditionees have told us that, as opposed to feeling threatened, they actually felt welcome at our auditions — we wouldn’t give that up for anything.

So why not audition? Of course, you have a shot at becoming a new Amateur — but think about it: the worst that can happen is that you’ll make fourteen new friends.
